It looks like determining the Lineal champion is all subjective dependent upon the general public/sanctioning bodies opinion.

Meaning as long as long as a fighter has strong opposition and is champion, one can make an argument for him to be lineal champion.

In this case, it looks like the the fighter with the best claim to the Lineal Championship would be the one with the stronger strength of schedule....

    • As mentioned.

To be the man, you have to beat the man. If Pac beats Floyd, he becomes the man at 147. If Chavez beats Martinez, he becomes the man at 160. If Bute beats Ward, he becomes the man, since due to competition, Ward is considered the guy at 168 now.

Basically, you have to beat the perceived number one in the weight class to become number one. It's actually quite easy if you follow boxing on who's generally considered the best in the class. When there's doubt as to who's number one or two, it basically defaults to who was considered number 1 first. It's up to the challenger (number 2) to prove he's number 1. HENCE.. you gotta beat the man to be the man.

Sanctioning bodies have zero to do with this. This isn't called unified champion.
