  • "He will lose because he doesn't have the power to keep his opponent off him"

This (or something similar)is one of the comments posted on here quite a bit, and IMO it's overused.

I've seen it said about Malignaggi and Calzaghe in the past month or so several times.

A lot of people seem to think that, if you have limited power, you can't hurt your opponent, and therefore they can just march forward and land at will, with no risk of being hurt.

Being punched in the face by someone the same size as you hurts. It hurts even more if that person is a professional boxer who has spent 20 years learning how to throw a punch in the way that causes the most damage.

Chris Byrd was a blownup LHW, David Tua has a great chin and has shown in the past that it only takes one solid hook for him to end a fight, even against sometime world champions like Moorer and Ruiz. Despite all this, Tua ended up losing on points.

Kessler had a high KO % and had never been down. Lacy had a high KO % and had never been down. Hopkins has an excellent chin.

Take a look at Malignaggi-N'Dou 1. Paulie doesn't have much power. N'Dou has never been KO'd. So in theory, N'Dou should win because he can just walk through Paulie's punches. Of course the reality is different.

In round 9, N'Dou tried to simply walk through Paulie punches, and he ended up on the floor. This shows that even if you have a good chin, you still have to show your opponent respect. You need to wait for openings, keep your guard up/stay out of range, and pick your shots carefully.

If those openings don't come, then you have to leave yourself open in an attempt to land, and that leads to incidents like the 9th round KD.

Hatton will not be able to just walk through Malignaggi. Dawson will not be able to walk through Calzaghe if they fight. Of course power comes into it, but there are many examples of a guy without much power beating someone with an excellent chin.

    That is all
