What are you not understanding here?

It doesn't matter who the hell had better media coverage or television airtime. The question is "Who is this bigger boxing ICON". IF SRR was born 20 years later, IF SRR grew up in the internet age you assume he would be a bigger icon than Ali. IF IF IF......Maybe but very likely not because Ali's iconic status is more about the political stance he took and his big mouth comedy routine than than it is about his fighting. Had he not been a "character" he wouldn't have been anywhere near as iconic. Like any historical figure he had the perfect storm of ingredients that came together at the perfect time. The same is true about all highly touted individuals in all fields of discipline. People love to create a hero to worship even if they have to choose a man who was no greater than his peers. Idol worship seems to be a human addiction.

What's the point of this comparison? All you're going to do is have people belittle the greatest pound for pound fighter in the history of boxing.

It's obvious who made a bigger impact outside of boxing but Ali's worldwide acclaim shouldn't be used as ammunition to go at Sugar Ray Robinson.

You are lost and it does matter you really think Ali would have be become the icon he became without the media coverage? If you then do you really on that super crack

As far as an icon, nobody is close to Ali. Ali is probably the greatest figure in sports history period. But he completely transcended. He's flat out one of the greatest cultural icons ever.

Sugar Ray is the real GOAT. Don't buy into the bull****

Muhammad Ali is The Greatest Coward and Hypejob of All Time

Just a fact. Just watch his fight in the studio with Joe Frazier. Frazier stands in front of him and Ali tells him to sit down because his nation of islam members are in the studio. When Frazier then is distracted by one of the brothers, Ali stands up and attacks him. Like the coward he was. His own people admit they fought Frazier a 3rd time out of cowardice, Joe was shot by that time, won only 5 of the last 10 fights of his career.

He won cause of hype, he won cause of cheating, he won because he threatened and accused judges. He painted every judge who chose against him in the first Frazier as a racist. Bill Recht once said that his wife was punched and he was attacked as a racist after picking Frazier. What judge would pick against Ali knowing he would pretty much tell Nation of Islam members and blacks to attack them?

He was consistently allowed to hold behind peoples heads, rabbit punch, and push. People say the Klitschko's clinch? Yeah...ok...Ali clinches at least twice as much.

Everyone knew the refs were crooked and allowed Ali to do this trash. The guy was a bum. Lost to Frazier 1, shoulda been dqed in Frazier 2, beat a wached up bum in Frazier 3. Lost all 3 Norton fights. Lost to Shavers and Young. Ali shows how Bum+Hype+Nations of Islam could make idiots think someone was the "greatest."

The 4 year "prime" layoff was a joke. First of all another example of cowardice. Second no one knows what would have happened during that time, that tiem off allowed the brain damage that Cooper laid on him to not be exposed as soon, also made him gain weight which helped his glass chin out.

            The guy was a joke.

SRR didn't have the media then ,its Ali and its not even a comparable status ,let alone Ali was the HW Champion which will always over shadow the smaller ones.

Ali man. Even as a kid, that was the first name I became accustomed to hearing in relation to boxing. Whether it be jokes among friends or just in discussion. Personally for me, as I was a late bloomer to get into the sport, roughly around 15yrs old, I did not know SRR's name until then.

                  Ali, without a doubt.

Robinson may have been the better fighter, was certainly a more fluid offensive operator but as an icon and the image which represent boxing, it's Ali.

Ali is the biggest icon in boxing also because of advancing of media.
As a boxer, I liked SRR more (but this doesn't make him a bigger "icon".).
