If someone went into work and the white colleagues were praised for showing up at 9:00am whilst the black colleagues grilled for showing up at 9:00, you wouldn't need the employer to say something explicit racist to make a legally actionable claim. The onus would be placed on the employer to show that race isn't at the root of the different reactions.
I feel that the people covering/following boxing are in a similar situation. When you're dealing with Mayweather, you can reasonably say the guy is a prick. When you're dealing with a fighter like Ward and he is juxtaposed with a guy like Kovalev, it is a head scratcher when people hate Ward for his arrogance and bad personality.
Same when it comes down to accomplishments in the ring. Why is the bar set considerably higher for black fighters. They're not allowed to struggle, they're not allowed to lose, they must always fight the best and move north of their division. For white fighters it is enough for them to knockout or school contenders in a weak division.
