Back then in the recent times and the thousands of years before that, the general definition of Atheism is that
"Atheism is the affirmation of the position that there is "No God" and that the belief or the acknowledgement of the existence of any deities is a false proposition." - According to the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, - a definition of Atheism that has been passed down for THOUSANDS of years, UNTIL the recent generation.
But then in the recent times it has been redefined to somewhat that Atheism is that "A lack of belief of deities or Gods." Which is a skewed form of Agnosticism that identifies that it does not deny the existence of God nor does it believe in the existence of God.
Paul Edwards, who was a prominent atheist and editor of the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, defined an atheist as "a person who maintains that there is no God."
Beginning in the latter portion of the 20th century and continuing beyond, many agnostics and atheists have argued that the definition of atheism should be a lack of belief in God or gods
Apparantly then Atheist DEMANDS that the 2nd definition is the correct one since the first one is outdated despite the fact that there has always been 3 positions of belief. The first definition had been the definition of Atheism since Atheism was first studied, UNTIL the rise of New Atheism did they skew the definition into something that would help them out in discussions.
Atheism-Agnosticism-Theism which Agnosticism is the middle ground of the two. So why atheists? Why redefine the word "Atheism" in order to further your agenda and help you out in debates?
So in other words Atheism had to redefine its position because the first position stood no chance in intellectual discussion
