Look what I tell you: I studied Eng. literature (sr year) and really had to read tons of British poems (of 16th to 20th c.), also read Americans. I read a lot of poems in German, Persian, and modern and classical Turkish, checked out French poetry a lil bit too with those helpful bilingual texts.
I truly believe that Persian and classical Turkish poetry dwarf the whole Western poetry, no contest. Compared to ours Western poetry seems like some child trying to produce poetry and recently I started to lose my patience and I just throw the book away, so low and cheap (no exaggration).
After all that I tell you that the poetry 'old school hip hop' is an exception and Rakim is the zenith. I cannot overlook by any means. They are the proof that in the language of English good and heavy poetry can be produced.
