No, the Irish suffered because of the English upper classes. To put all us English into one group is wrong. I've had this discussion a couple of times on this board now, but here goes again.

Do you think the majority of English people wanted British forces in Ireland in the lead upto independance? Public opinion was in favour of leaving Ireland.

I've always taken objection to the anti-English feeling that exists in Ireland, something that i've experienced first hand even though I myself are 1/2 Irish. Of course I understand the anger that exists, I would be angry too, but blaming a whole nation for a few mens actions is wrong IMO.

20% of us English have some Irish blood in us by the way.
