Genetic, hardwired, whatever you want to call it, I think that's the majority of gay people.. they like what they like because that's their instinct.

But I have no doubt there are losers on the fringe of society that "adapt" because they find acceptance...

Most gay people self-report as having been born gay or at least having felt the predisposition from an early age. Of course some people might never ever engage in same sex behaviours - perhaps for reasons such as a fear of social rejection - but yet still feels attracted to people of the same sex. Would you say they're 'gay'? What about straight women who do Lesbian scenes for porn? Are they gay? Guys who are confined with other men for extended periods - prison and in previous eras perhaps sailors (or soldiers - the Spartans were badass dudes but were pretty much expected to have fuckbuddies on campaign I think) for instance - and fuck each other, but fuck women when they're available? Simply looking at where someone puts their bits and pieces doesn't really give the full picture...

As for the evolutionary angle? Well- as a species or social animal we carry many members who are not genetically useful in a direct sense - why for instance are women not genetically programmed to die shortly after the menopause? Members of a society who are not spending so much time and energy raising kids can be useful to a community in other ways - Alan Turing for instance without whom we may not be able to be using computers now. Also why do gay behaviours exist in the animal kingdom?

IDK man. It's too complicated an issue to be simply ascribed to genes (though it does seem possible there is a genetic component) and as long as it ain't making an individual unhappy or unable to function effectively as a member of society then surely it can't be classified as a mental disorder... in fact surely it would be more 'mental' to deny oneself sexual fulfillment simply because it ain't the social norm.

What I don't understand is why there's any need to describe it as aberrant at all. Partly it's a social construct - the ancient Greeks for instance simply accepted it for what it was - just something that some people do. What the fuck does it really matter how people fuck or who they fuck? Whatever makes an individual happy is cool in my book, providing they ain't harming anyone else.

It is my belief that gay is a combination of nature and nurture. If your pop was effeminate or your mom butchy then those genes are passed on and can make a person more prone to being queer. However, that's only half of the puzzle, the other part is whether you act on it or how society shapes you in your early development.

Regardless, I think instead of society being so quick to accept it and parade it, my firm opinion is that gays would be much better off in the end if there was a half way concentrated effort to fix the imbalance or find a cure or what not.
