Indians just need to man up and bust out some push ups and get more involved in athletic events. SMDH.

i mentioned the likely impact of genes. culture and geography, too. men have been running long distances in that part of africa for as long as there have been men. and men from that part of the world have been winning medals in distance running for a long time. that sustains the production of new talent into a sport.

as for ethiopia and distance running, almost all of the elite male distance runners are kenyan, ethiopian, what have you. there's clearly a genetic advantage in the context of distance running to having lineage from that part of the world.

who cares if you're poor if you can run faster than everybody else ? in india they don't have the advantage of the best distance running build on the planet.

Indians/Paks are just not that sturdy compared to most blacks and Europeans. We've got a huge population in the UK and I don't think there has ever been one pro footballer. An Indian I know says they can't run. A generalisation but you look at the population and it must have some truth. You look at how Jamaica punts out sprinters and Iceland and Georgia has strong men, it must be genetic.

                  http://www.pamf.org/southasian/healt.../bodysize.html

South Asians may not appear to be as overweight as other ethnic groups. However, they may have inherited a gene that makes their bodies store more fat around their stomach, a factor referred to as central obesity. This type of body fat is linked to a higher rate of diabetes and heart attacks. The typical body shape of a South Asian who is at a high risk for these conditions involves a large stomach with relatively slender arms and legs.
                  http://press.endocrine.org/doi/full/...0/jc.2009-1030

Participants, Design, and Setting: Aboriginal (196), Chinese (222), European (202), and South Asian (208) individuals were recruited across a range of body mass index to participate in this cross-sectional community study.

Main Outcome Measures: Total body fat, lean mass, and insulin resistance were assessed using homeostasis model assessment (HOMA).

Results: After adjustment for confounders and at a given body fat, South Asian men had less lean mass than Aboriginal [3.42 kg less; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.55–5.29], Chinese (3.01 kg less; 95% CI = 1.33–4.70), and European (3.57 kg less; 95% CI = 1.82–5.33) men, whereas South Asian women had less lean mass than Aboriginal (1.98 kg less; 95% CI = 0.45–3.50), Chinese (2.24 kg less; 95% CI = 0.81–3.68), and European (2.97 kg less; 95% CI = 1.67–4.27) women. In adjusted models, F:LM was higher in South Asian compared with Chinese and European men and higher in South Asian compared with Aboriginal, Chinese, and European women (P < 0.01 for all). Insulin and HOMA were greatest in South Asians after adjustment; however, these differences were no longer apparent when F:LM was considered.

Conclusions: South Asians have a phenotype of high fat mass and low lean mass, which may account for greater levels of insulin and HOMA compared with other ethnic groups.
South Asians have a phenotype of high fat mass and low lean mass which may account for greater levels of insulin and homeostasis model assessment than other ethnic groups.
