  • ESPN will cut $80 million in salaries in upcoming layoffs: report

ESPN is expected to cut millions of dollars in salaries when layoffs happen in the near future.

Sporting News is reporting ESPN will slash about $80 million in salaries and other costs when the third round of layoffs in two years come down after Thanksgiving and before Christmas. The network reportedly plans to part ways with over 100 staffers.

The latest round of layoffs is expected to impact positions on the television side, producers, executives and those in digital and technology, according to Sports Illustrated. SportsCenter is expected to be "hit hard" by the cuts and current on-air talent could soon be unemployed.

This past April, ESPN laid off over 100 reporters and personalities, including big-name talents such as Trent Dilfer, Ed Werder and Danny Kanell.

In October 2015, the company also laid off over 300 employees.

A source told Sporting News that staffers are "numb" following the last two layoffs, believing they barely survived the cuts. Many feel their day is coming and they'll soon be on the market looking for a new job.

The source also said managers could also be impacted.

"Since there's less SC shows there's less need for all management. It was reported that cuts being made later in the year to allow some folks to get stock they are eligible for in January. Management level gets stock," the source told Sporting News.

According to Sports Business Journal, ESPN lost $1 billion in affiliate revenue after losing 13 million subscribers in just six years.

The layoffs are coming following news of two big extensions at the network. Scott Van Pelt, who hosts the late night "SportsCenter," was re-signed by the network as was ESPN president John Skipper.

How did it get this bad? lol Shelling out to much money for games? Does this have to do with the NBA salary cap going up because of their TV deals?

Its just crazy how one of the biggest TV networks over the last 2-3 decades is struggling this bad.

Its crazy how much money they spend on games. I heard ESPN spent like 40-90million or something crazy for the one texans playoff game last year against Oakland when both teams QBs were **** lol

Now the NFL is under fire. Hopefully that can drop the prices so networks arent going bankrupt to show games.

I hardly watch ESPN anymore unless it's NBA or Boxing and only watch sport center after a big game

I do love ESPN 3 though

Licensing deals and cord cutting. Live sports is always a good investment but gotta figure out how to give it to the people without having to sit in front of the TV

The simple answer is that cord cutting is real and Disney (parent to ABC/ESPN) didn't respect it until it was too late.

Once the world went digital and interactive, the need to tune in and watch Sportscenter every night for at least a bit went away.

The NBA deal didn't help, but ESPN has been needing this streamlining for at least 5 years at this point, they just keep punking out on it.

Still, ESPN will be alright; cut the management dollars, cut the talent that need to be cut, simplify the talent needed for Sportscenter, keep the interesting shows during the day, and do what you can to Maxim the move to digital content.
