Layoffs, laziness, the breaking of his "aura" of invincibility by Douglas, beatings from Evander and prison time ruined Tyson. Weights had nothing to do with it.

He meant that Tyson only started lifting weights after he started going downhill, he doesn't mean the weights caused him too.

Weight lifting is something of a cult. If anyone comes out with anything that may be construed as even remotely heretical then the inquisition get on their case LOL.
To be honest most pros include some form of weight training in their boxing training. I've seen Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley train with weights for example, hasn't apparently made their hands slower. Amir Khan was a bit of a weights fanatic before he went with Roach, never slowed his hands down although Freddie has concentrated more on Amir's legs recently, his torso is less muscular than before.
Earnie Shavers put his power down to weight training.
It has to be one of those areas where too much or poor lifting technique can impede a boxer's performance or cause injury. Modern world class coaches and trainers have surely now got the techniques down so as to be of benefit to the modern professional boxer.
