I learned this in a demography course that was a pre-req for my major.
For a country to maintain stability, they have to have a birthrate of at least 2.1. That means each couple should have at least 2 children(the .1 is to account for mortalities) for the country to be stable. 1 to replace the mother and one to replace the father. Japan's birthrate is only 1.4
There's a pyramid effect with age groups where the youth holds up the aging. When there are more aging people then there youth to replace them, what you get is an unstable upside down pyramid.
Good news is once the older folk die off, the younger Japanese people will be the inheritors of a country whose vast wealth can now be directed toward them and not the baby boomers of the past.

Japan PM says "must look after own citizens first" before taking immigrants
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/09...ens-first.html
He says they must first address the declining birth-rates among native Japanese.
They only took in 11 asylum seekers out of 5,000 applicants. And most were already living in Japan, and were from countries with compatible cultures like Vietnam, and Laos.
What a great leader of his people, and his country.
What is so terribly racist, and mean about wanting to take care of your own citizens, and worry about preserving your own culture?

Nothing. It's how every country should approach their own. Hopefully Trump continues pushing us in the right direction.

And a relief to the over population of Japan would be a good thing. It's roughly the size of Finland with a population roughly double that of the UK. Tokyo and Osaka's population alone equal the population of the UK.
Japanese are NOT xenophobic - they just love their own culture, and have a deep appreciation, and urge to preserve it.
There is a difference. They appreciate and enjoy other cultures too - they just understand they can't open their doors and have a free for all.

But why should the answer be to automatically start taking in hundreds of thousands of people who can't speak the language, and come from cultures that aren't compatible with Japanese society?
Wouldn't it be better to first try to address the issue with the native Japanese? Seems like it'd be more practical, and cheaper. Not to mention easier on the host population.
One should look no further than Germany, and Sweden to see the disaster of bringing in hordes of muslims (particularly Somalians in Sweden - they are a nightmare).
Did you know that Sweden has the second highest rape rate in the industrialized world?!? When a few decades ago - even a decade ago, they were among the lowest?
And, that in Norway, and Sweden, over 85% of all rapes, and sexual assaults are committed by NON-native Swedes/Norwegians?

There's nothing wrong with saying "we like our country, our culture, and our people the way it is..." "sorry - but we're good."
