  • everything gets better in time. why should boxing be different ?

    • there are plenty of other factors.

the biggest factor is simply the times we live in. You know how many times a fight is stopped nowadays when a guy is simply shook up? these are far softer times. The shot Larry Homes took from Shavers and got up from and still won, there isn't anyone today that would do that out side of a few fighters like Marquez or Pacquiao, people from rougher backgrounds.

the other factor is the amateur game has merged with the pro game. A lot of pro fighters after 200 fights in the ams never shake that style of volume sprinting over effective hard shots.

lastly. Business. Fighters are smarter now and are in the game to make money, they aren't hoodrats with 0 education being moved around like a chesspeice. Floyd Mayweather really took this to another level but Canelo seems to be setting the new record.

I am a 27 year old and I watch all the eras of boxing, the easiest point of evidence is simply the fight tapes. You can tell these guys from back in the day are all tough determined and hungry fighters unlike our cellphone distraction ridden era. I have never seen anyone today as dynamic and skilled as a Roberto Duran or a Ray Leonard. These guys came to fight - you could almost feel the energy coming through the computer screen.

because not everything gets better with time. just check the olympic records, half of them haven't been broken even as far back as the 60's.

That's interesting! Half the Olympic records from the 60's are yet to be broken? Other than Bob Beamon's incredible, one-off long jump from 1968, can you give us some examples of Olympic records from the 60's that are still standing?

I said even as far back as the 60's. there are plenty from the 80's. you clowns act like every record has been broken within 5 years. humans don't evolve that ****ing fast. I mean yeah you can make a statement maybe comparing fighters from the 30's to now, where technique was obviously more under developed but they were still tough. You can't make a massive gap in ability that outweighs a fighters natural ability within a 20-30 year gap. A lot of these guys are still alive FFs.

There are plenty of flaws with olympic records as well.

a modern sprinter isn't even faster than jesse owens if they wear the same shoes. modern conditioning can't defeat hard work of just straight up ability. You people are really ignorant if you completely write off a fighter because he fought 40 years ago.

                • When boxing and most of the top boxers was mainly in the states it was easier to match the best.
A boxer from another country's goal was to compete in the US.
For evolution to happen in Boxing it has to have the type situations emposed upon it or some what mimic the situations that causes it to happen in real life.
1 Individuals don't evolve but populations evolve
Nothing is guaranteed to evolve with time.
populations evolving doesn't mean whole species.
At one time there were a bunch of different human species
                  now just one.
Just cause there are more boxers doesn't mean
                  they've evolved.
It just means that worldwide there are more people who box worldwide.
How many are registered pros in the US.
In the US you had the mixing pot the best talent wanted to compete so this was the place to get to if you wanted to excel.
Boxers aren't pressured to acquire the skills they used to need to attain or compete at a top level.
Its like everyone's okay with mediocrity.
There's no pressure to get over the top good its not required.
Boxing's not under pressure to evolve.
Its not like only one guy is the man everyone's got to beat.
Its diluted no one top for the cream to rise to just
isolated pockets of no contact with each other cesspools.

That comments about Cubans knowing how to Box is a symptom of lack of understanding of how its digressed.
Some would have been great if allowed to evolve
Cubans mastered the art of winning in an Olympics situation style of boxing.
They evolved a style that gives them an edge to win on
                  points.
But rather boring unless your entertained with flag football
There goal wasn't a pro career just a medal for Cuba
Those stats are flawed if two boxing pools never meet
neither evolves cause there is no pressure to.
They stay at the same level

It’s not about evolution as a species to me. It’s much more simple. It’s the mechanics of competition. The more competition you have, the better the best is. The best of 100 boxers is better than the best of 10 boxers all things equal.
