I specialized in demography in graduate school and don't see this as a standard "Ha-ha, your side lost" political scenario. We basically just watched France make its exit from human history. For current trends to even mildly taper off, drastic change was required. It was already beyond the point of truly preserving but Macron's policies of acceleration will make even the eventual diaspora of the ethnic French a very ugly and abrupt one.

The whole world should be mourning. It really transcends politics.

Before that, his predecessor Chirac was busted for embezzlement and given a suspended prison sentence -- I think by the time he is scheduled to actually serve his symbolic ultra-low security sentence, it will have been nearly 20 years (or he will weasel out of it/die).

Technically, they did vote for change. Both traditional parties were rejected in favour of an independent and roughly 45% voted for anti-EU candidates in the first round.

France isn't quite there yet but unless Macron can somehow turn things around, the shift will continue and Le Pen or some other hardliner will be elected.
