However, Zuffa is obviously making money off of him regardless. So, it is sort of dumb of them to denigrate him in such a way.

You think that Nike Sponsorship stays if Dana goes full on hissy fit mode and cuts him? He'll be forgotten about in a year if he's not on UFC. Sure he could probably make a career crushing cans in Bellator, but nobody would give a ****. Also, Jon isn't even UFC's biggest draw, not even near it...
