  • IF Floyd were to fight Conor in the cage who would he need to work with to prepare?

Just curious about IF Floyd were to legit go into MMA for a one off fight with Conor what sort of training would he need to do to avoid being taken down & to avoid being kicked in the head & exploited via kicks, knees, elbows & who would be ideal to work with to get him there in a reasonable time frame?

I know this is some fantasyland sh^t, but I thought the first fight was fantasyland sh^t that wasn't going to happen too so who f#cking knows anymore.

And honestly I'm not aware of any sprawl specialists (a key for Floyd if this fight got made even if Conor isn't much of a ground guy himself) & I'm not sure one could even get close to the needed muscle memory going with avoiding the non-fist strikes that will be coming his way. Conor has a very solid & fluid kick game that would surely be used early & often in this alleged fantasyland fight.

All that said I think its like 3% to happen, but again as mentioned I probably thought there was a similar chance the first fight would take place so idk that anyone should have THAT much confidence this 2nd fight doesn't happen & personally I think even if it were to happen it'd have hybrid rules that would hinder what Conor could do cuz boxers are underarmed for a cage fight.

Way to much to learn in a short amount of time. However I don't think a fight with Connor is as dangerous as many believe since McGregor tends to stay on the feet. If Floyd only has to focus on avoiding kicks/elbows and not so much on being taken down then his foot speed might make it possible for it to be very a competitive match.

Conor is a ninja on the ground in comparison to Floyd doe. If I'm Conor fighting a guy who just beat my ass standing up taking him down where he's got nothing for me seems like the plan, but I'm some art of war reading mfer.

The non-punching striking would open the door up to a more competitive stand up battle vs the first fight I'd agree with you there & I think Conor would still need to tread somewhat lightly. Then again Floyd's hand problems in those lil ass gloves makes me think Floyd might not be as effective standing up in the cage even if they were straight boxing.

I would just have him focus on wrestling, bjj and judo are cute but wrestling is the most important aspect in the ground game. Teaches you to defend against takedowns and how to work yourself into a dominant position. Learn to sprawl and defend against kicks and Floyd could have some success.

He wouldn't need any additional training, the sweet science would carry him

How does boxing help one when you are getting choked out? Conor had his back in the boxing ring. If that happens in the cage its a wrap.

Can you learn wrestling that quick? I mean lets assume if this fight got signed its happening in Sept. to Dec. so he's have 7 to 11 months to learn wrestling? But yea of the 3 disciples mentioned I'd agree wrestling is probably the easiest to learn & that would take you further quicker.

Sprawling I think one could learn fairly well in that sorta time table if you got a good teacher & you get tested + experience.

The kicking stuff I'd be concerned about cuz most of the things Floyd does in boxing is bad in MMA & idk if you could reasonably be expected to unlearn that 35yrs or w/e of muscle memory that Floyd's got thats wired to boxing.

My mother had me join wrestling when I was like 8 years old so I don't really remember exactly when it really started to come together for me but I remember by the time I reached middle school I was really good. Wrestling isn't the most technical thing in the world but like most combat sports the repetition of it makes you better. Another important aspect of wrestling is being powerful and explosive, that's why weight lifting is very important. It's not inconceivable to say Floyd could become a decent enough wrestler if he spent a year focusing on it. And like you said really focusing on the takedown defense aspect. Also keep in mind I only wrestled, I never had to deal with all the other aspects of mma so it hard to say to be honest, but floyds a great athlete so wouldn't put it past him

I'd advise Floyd ignore BJJ training in regards to actually being on his back... as if it got that far he's toast....and the training time is so limited.

Instead I'd get him to focus on defending upper body greco/judo style takedowns with an emphasis on getting prepared for the cage as the larger Conor could easily press him against it then work for a takedown. Priority 1

Focus on getting Floyd practice in dropping his hips and sprawling as while Conor has is poor at single and double legs it would be the fastest and safest way to get Floyd down. Randy took Toney down with a simple ankle pick....if Toney had worked more on dropping his hips he could have potentially defended it. Priority 2

Conor is a BJJ brown belt but not great with action takedowns. He is decent in a reactionary sense and would probably try to clinch and wrestle Floyd down which would be very easy for him.

Regarding kicks..... I would focus exclusively on counter opportunities rather than straight defence as it actually opens up an avenue of victory for Floyd.

Countering a punch is of course Floyd's best shot at a win...but would be expected by Conor. Countering a kick gives Floyd another potential win Avenue and a way to potentially surprise Conor... he's not going go surprise Conor on the ground that's for sure.

For all his bragging about being a stand up beast... Conor would be a fool to strike with Floyd and most likely he would take the best path to victory which is via grappling.

Floyd has quick enough hands and the accuracy to spark Conor if Conor throws a kick (Conor is an ok kicker but not great) whereas on the ground Floyd has nothing.
