The deal with adding weight after the scales is to try and hit your best sparring weight as the fight drew closer. If you did your best work at 166-70
then after the scale you go to that "best weight"! Hagler had all the weight
situations down pat he knew his body and was a terrificly conditioned boxer.
Everyone is different a fighter can hurt himself if he doesn't find the right proccess to loose then replenish.

Didn't he have very long reach for someone his height? People with large frames usually are heavier that those with average frames.

Correct, Hagler had freakishly long reach for his height

Yes he did! When Hagler boxed on the moving using lateral movement he knew how to use his lead shoulder and jab to show a side shot of himself.
He had terrific defense when he boxed but he learned that mixing in fighting with boxing skills was a benefit when it could be applied.
Hagler fought some of the toughest men as he came up to the ranks. His record has alot of tough quality fighters on it and his looses were avenged.
Fighting in Philly at that time against the Worm and Briscoe wasn't a
trail test" is was a get your azz kicked if your not on top of your game test!
Hagler was a terrific fighter to watch, he was a real pro and a great champ.

No more than a few pounds. Not anything crazy like today. Some water and a solid meal. Anything more than that you'll feel like you have to take a shyt when you have to fight in a few hours.
