Depends...How much would become state versus federal? And would it be along the lines of a sin tax? "you want to drink sodas, pay up!" Or more along the lines of what Bush tried?

it could also be a tariff, a way to get people to buy american goods, because the cost of imported goods would be prohibitive. Notice that these are all strategies that are already in use in various forms in other parts of the world, and even in America.

The main thing is not so much the specific amount of a tax levied on the back end, but rather taxing the back end rather than the front. Taxing a man's wages as compared to taxing him for the choices he makes spending his wages.

Tax in a way that the burden isn't too great on an individual.

Of course! And frankly? The problem is logistically easy to fix,
The IRS does not want taxes to go away.

I think the tax system is just unpleasant for everyone. Nobody really wants it if we could find something that is fair. Rich people are not crazy about it either.

Raising consumption taxes puts a greater burden on the low-earners because they spend a greater portion of their income on consumption. Especially necessary consumption.

So leave the tax as progressive.
Put that silly flat rate tax out the door.

Your first statement is illogical at best. Since when would a low earner spend more money on consumptable items? You might mean that a greater proportion of their income goes towards these items. But that shows short sightedness. There are tariffs for example, sin taxes, etc all ways of taxing consumable items.

Progressive taxation is a little bit like race based admissions. Even of one thinks it is ultimately a way to address a wrong, most would agree it is unjust and not the best way to address such a wrong. It might be to some the best we have now.

So you read a bit on flat rate taxes? huh? did you look at any stuff sent? Progressive taxation has not done very well for us and in some places it has created a culture of trying to take wealth and preserve it elsewhere.

Blue - tariffs would put a greater burden on lower-earners too because importers would just pass on the increase. High earners are better able to take the hit from the raise in price than the lower-earners. Sin taxes no one cares about raise it as high as you want because folks shouldn't be doing those activities but those industries will complain about job losses.

Progressive taxation tries to assign the tax burden in a manner that folks are able to bear.

Green - flat rate with high consumption tax would be a greater burden for lower-earners.

Green - flat rate with high consumption tax would be a greater burden for lower-earners.
There is no one way to use a consumption tax, anymore than there is one way to enforce a progressive tax. Tariffs are a lot more involved than that. Tariffs would also allow domestic business' to sell cheaper.

High earners always always and always become lower earners because of excessive taxation. Thats what a tax on wages does to people. It robs them of using disposable income the way they desire.

These theories are all well and good...But its a fact that taxing wages has always caused endemic poverty. Some people think it destroyed the Roman Empire. At the end of the day taxing taxing on the other end is a more fair than assuming there is some arbitrary degree of wealth that entitles the government to take more from some than others.

I agree with Ibad that it is kind of galling to hear people so ready to declare what should be done with other people's income. Keeping in mind that in places like Silicon Valley a six figure salary is considered poverty wages...

So what is rich? Even 300K is nothing in these areas. What arbitrary indication is in place to decide who is taken from?
