You have to stand in sheer awe at the intellectual contributions John Barron has provided to this thread. His deep insights, well sourced evidence, and incisive analysis have added a great deal of value to the thread and have shaped my perspective on the issues.

You are a hero, John Barron.,

Look, I am not saying what you said is 100% incorrect. I'm just asking that you not regurgitate the same over simplistic idiotic garbage that 1bad65 does. You are not dumb.

I think it does no one any good for us to be disingenuous about what truly happened in Venezuela. It also makes absolutely no sense to pretend the US is going to switch from capitalism to socialism if we suddenly discover a trove of oil.

The fear that politicians that believe in socialized medicine will somehow band together to convert the US to a different economic system is utterly stupid.

Can't we just have an honest, educated discussion about a topic rather than dumb it down to the level of 1bad65?

The oil didn't run out in Venezuela, they have the largest oil reserves in the world. Their economy collapsed when oil prices dropped and they still functioned like they had the revenues pre oil drop prices. In fact they doubled down and expanded their socialist policies when the money was running low, a sure way to destroy your economy.

If you care to read it, this article has a pretty good summary of Venezuela's situation.

All economies are termed “mixed”. We are a mixed system. A combination of BOTH capitalism and socialism. It’s the mixture of the two that tempers each systems disadvantages. The simplistic viewpoint that the US is capitalistic and Russia (as an example) is communistic is a fallacy that the far right entertainers have perpetrated upon an uneducated audience. We would not want to live in a fully capitalistic system just as much as we would not want to live in a fully socialist system. BOTH models have tremendous disadvantages.
