Default Association of Boxing Commissions looking to implement Minimum Fighters Weight (MFW)

Quote:
The 29th Annual Association of Boxing Commissions Conference will be held next week at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. With many of the recent headlining topics in both boxing and mixed martial arts, fighter safety is a top concern for officials.

One of the key topics that will be discussed/addressed is weight loss / weight cutting.

According Gregory Sirb, Executive Director, PA State Athletic Commission, “It is time for BOTH boxing and MMA to follow the NCAA procedures and Techniques.”

The National Collegiate Athletic Association implements a rule that states that ALL wrestlers must maintain at least 5% of the body fat at all times, ( 7% for females).

The American College of Sports Medicine and The American Academy of Pediatrics have set 5% as the minimum percent body fat to insure good health. Going below the minimum of 5% body fat can lead to serious health consequences and impaired performance.

A simple SKIN TEST by all fighters (beginning JANUARY of each year) will be able to determine the lowest weight that all fighters may compete while maintaining the 5% RULE.

This Minimum Fighters Weight (MFW) will be attached to Fight FAX, BoxRec and the ABC MMA Data base, thus ensuring that NO FIGHTER is competing under their MFW.

“By maintaining this 5% RULE – we can be assured that no fighter is “dangerously “cutting to a weight class where physical (and mental) issues can and will occur,” Sirb said.

Great idea & a move towards getting rid of the sport within the sport of weight loss.

Thoughts, opinions?

Who's gonna have to move up a weight division if this becomes a reality?

I talked about this before when i wrestled they checked our water hydration and fat levels.

This helps big time from weight bullies.

Guys like brandon rios will be forced to fight at 168 instead of 147.

But does rios really have less than 5% body fat? He looks to have much more and just cuts much more waterweight.

That's great news. Weight bullies are one of my biggest bugbears in boxing

I think a lot of notable fighters will be moving up if this comes to fruition

Good idea for boxers cutting body fat weight but still doesn't address dehydration/re-hydration water weight. Body fat minimum combined with day of fight weigh-in would address both issues. When we talk about all-time P4P and GOATs it's good to remember the GOAT SRR fought WW at =/< 147, MW =/< 160 so did all the Golden Era fighters that today's boxing fans look at and say, he was too small, lacked power, etc. Well they are comparing them to today's 160#+ Welters and 175#+ Middles. With all today's weigh divisions MFW would work but would have been difficult with only the 8 original weight divisions.

I like what they are trying to do but i don't see this doing anything. I mean i can't think of a single -5% body-fat boxer and this wont address re-hydration issues at all. You can be +20% body-fat and cut a lot of weight just look at wrestling and MMA.

I dont really give a sht about this, but I can see how as a sport you wouldn't want guys dropping dead like flies. What I really want is the return to the original weightclasses.

Have a catchweight if you want to beat up someone smaller than you.

Canelo instantly came to mind reading this. What would his career look like if something like this was implemented 5 yrs ago?
