  • Ortiz brings us to an interesting question

Even though most people saw Ortiz quit against Maidana he brings us to the question of when is it the right time to stop the fight yourself when your corner wont?

I personally think the actions of Buddy McGirt saved Gatti and Brewster from having to quit in the ring by stopping the fights when they were taking a beating. Nacho called it off for DLH when Pac slapped him around which arguably would have ended in another embarrassing "bodyshot KO" for oscar if the fight continued. So when does the fighter step in to save himself when no one else will or should the fighters live up to the kill or be killed mantra when they step in the ring?

The trainer and fighter should have some sort of signal, Ortiz gave every indication he wanted it stopped when he was in the corner before the round started, he wasnt even paying attention, you could see in his eyes he wanted him to stop it.

That's the problem, what happens when a corner refuses to stop the fight? We get a situation like Ortiz. In certain fights like the "no mas" fight I don't think being physically hurt was the problem and that is more of an embarrassing offense than Ortiz having his head handed to him and deciding enough is enough. Arguably popo might get a break for quitting against chico but what he did against Diaz was as bad as no mas and IMO worse than what Ortiz did.

The worst part of the whole fight was his post-fight comments. That is what made him look bad and made the whole quiting scenario put under the microscope more.

When Ali was blinded by Liston's peppermint oil liniment, he was yelling to the ref "CUT EM OFF!" talking about his gloves, forfeiting, etc...

Dundee was on the steps and dashed back up, pushed Ali up and yanked the stool back and said, 'This is the big one, kid!' ...if Dundee hadn't done that, Ali might have lost to Liston...different circumstances, sure...but I think alot of times a corner knows best

Wtf? Ortiz gave up on his own. His corner didn't signal anything. Ortiz wasn't even taking a beating. What boxer doesn't get pounded or large volumes of punches thrown at them in the corner?

Oscar was obviously drained beyond medically safe levels. If they need an iv to rehydrate you, you had no business fighting in the first place.

Again, you can't compare anything Gatti does in the ring to anyone. Outside of Marciano of course.

So, what you're saying here, is in your opinion, Gatti = Marciano.

Lol. Not really, if you compare heart and will. You can make the comparison. Otherwise, no.
