I dont think it would be possible to survive if it got to the point where escape donw the stairs would be impossible

I suppose its all about how quick you react and how soon you got the news

If you couldnt get out down the stairs in time my second choice would be to get as low as I could and jump hopefully onto something like a car thatw ould break my fall a bit, obviously expecting broken legs but aiming leg first

If time build or get hold of something long like sheets or fire hose chain etc to get even close to teh ground before letting go and dropping

Perhaps a home made parachute and aim for a car, would slow you a bit hopefully
