Default Special Strategies Pt.1

There are strong feelings the winner might have lost without the special strategy he employed. The most notable example is probably Ali's rope-a-dope.

How often does this occur, where the special strategy really saves the day? Can you think of other obvious instances?

Or perhaps you feel every fight is a special strategy because that is what top trainers do. Is it just, then, that sometimes the strategy called for is not so novel that it draws the same kind of attention that something unusual does? Still, any good trainer devises a special strategy, you feel. Is that it?

Sometimes, of course, the special strategy is improvised. What is the most special and particular strategy you can think of that you know was planned ahead of time?

Some are going to know a lot more about this question than others.

Winky Wright sticking the jab in Trinidads face all night to prevent him from every getting off with offense. Hopkins mugging Pavlik all night and making him look silly.

That's a good topic.. Looking forward to responses that others can bring.
1) Ike Ibeabuchi vs Chris Byrd
Not so much a special strategy - but it stuck in my mind that Ike Ibeabuchi compared the punch he hurt Byrd with to "Catching a fly", which is not punching at where Byrd's head was, but at were you expected it to be after he moved it.
Sounds simple, but no one was really able to catch Byrd - despite him often pulling back with his hands not in position - with that kind of clean shot...

2) Crawford vs Postol
More recent one - but I thought it was impressive how Crawford was able to switch to southpaw for entire fight - make taller men come to him and change angles by moving side to side constantly - to completely neutralise very capable opponent.

3) Mosley vs Margarito
Mosley did great job there tactically - he was loading up with overhand rights and left hook as Margarito was trying to press and then we tying him up each time, to not let middle-distance volume puncher get any kind of momentum.
There are some question marks around Margarito, but for what I saw - it was very impressive tactical performance by veteran Mosley.

--- Mosely was considered half shot and BALCO disgraced when he fought Margo who was in full juggernaut sway except...

Margo had secret eye surgery a couple weeks before the fight but kept it mum from commish docs, hence the plaster crumbles setup to let the big players know he wasn't fit to fight, sorta like a bank robber trying to Rob a bank with a squirt gun.

Their was no Shane strategy, he just overwhelmed marg in his last welter fight, the timing of the luck of the draw.

I'd say Ali running around like a banshee to blow out Listons shoulder worked like a charm.

All the $ was on the early Liston blowout that he was under orders to deliver. When he failed, well, we all know Listons tragic end.

Margos mind was all screwed up when he entered the ring for that fight. Its like going through a divorce on the first day and trying to sell a car afterwards.
