As I remember, Canelo wanted the fight at 154.
Canelo's words on fight week:
I've been able to make the weight in the past without a problem, Alvarez said. In fact, in my most recent fights I've been under on the day of the weigh-in. I really don't do that much work, so I think that it's going to be fine. I feel very, very good right now, and in fact, I think it's going to help me. I'm going to be a lot faster.

Because he could.
Since then Canelo has invented his own division, called Canelo-weight, also because he could.
Thats what boxers in power do.

because floyd is 40 and still could easily fight at 147. he only weighed 149.5 vs mcgregor 4 years after the canelo fight. when you are 36 fighting a 23 years old who is much bigger than you a 152lbs catchweight is more than fair. but i'm not a fan of catchweights tbh, didn't like it when pacquiao did it either. u will never get the full credit if u win. but i don't think canelo looked drained, mcgregor looked like a zombie during weigh-in, he clearly had trouble making 154.
