Have you read the words in the post?

"The Pentagon has released a statement confirming that soldiers could be prosecuted for promoting their faith: "Religious proselytization is not permitted within the Department of Defense...Court martials and non-judicial punishments are decided on a case-by-case basis...”.

The statement, released to Fox News, follows a Breitbart News report on Obama administration Pentagon appointees meeting with anti-Christian extremist Mikey Weinstein to develop court-martial procedures to punish Christians in the military who express or share their faith."

Religious proselytization (sic) is not permitted.

Proselytizing and sharing or expressing ones' faith are not the same thing. This seems to be a direct counter to the countless stories of Christian fundamentalist proselytizing in the US military, often perpetrated by senior officers against junior servicemen and servicewomen who are literally in no position to object.

The source is dodgy being "Breitbart News". Shockingly the Fox News story they link to is a much fairer analysis of the situation. Problem is that they don't link to the source of the claim. I believe the source is here. Of you read it you will see that it is from 2012 and in the last almost a year a "purge of christians" has not been forthcoming.

The military, just like any other branch of government in the US, has the duty to protect an individual's right to freedom of religion without appearing to or actually endorsing a particular religion in violation of the establishment clause. There have been clear violations of the constitution by senior officers who use their positions of power to force uncommissioned service members to attend worship sessions. This is putting an end to it.

Chaplains won't be affected, and neither will any individual member's rights to the free practice of their religion. This is a measure to prevent the religious from infringing on anyone else's right to practice a different religion or no religion at all.

As is fairly typical though the Christian fundamentalists are having a massive shit-fit and trying to reframe the redressing of the balance as some evil attempt to oppress them.

I assume this applies to Afghan civilians as well.

Imagine youre an Afgan, and the people who are proclaiming themselves to be friendly and there to help, also appear to be trying to spread their own faith?

That falls right in line with 'crusade' rhetoric. Horrible PR, and in this case bad PR leads to them firing an RPG at you.

Not only that, but its not likely to succeed anyway. So theres no point in riling them up and giving the unsavouries a little more flame to their cause.

In this case there is merit to the story, but the spin on it is ridiculous. Yes attempting to force your religion on everybody else is against the rules (rightly so) and yes the most egregious offenders are liable for court martial (again rightly so, that's what happens when you break the rules), no this does not mean that christians will not be allowed to be christians, no this does not mean that there will be a "purge", no this does not mean that personal religious belief will be outlawed.

Nicely put but you know "they're taking our guns and want us to become ****s" crowd probably wont read it.

BTW I served in the Marines and I agree with people getting in trouble if they are forcing this onto another Marine.
