From what I recall it was a massive farming error due to ignorance of potatoe biology.. long story short they planted only potatoes ( because they're easy to grow thus feed there populous) which you can't do because it depletes the nutrients of the soil and kills the land( which is why the Native Americans would mix crops). Since the soil died they couldn't grow food which lead to mass starvation ( 1.3 million) and emigration to other countries.
