As far as I can tell, you need the Real ID for flying, entering a federal building and in some states voting. I think you can still opt for a regular license just to drive.

Looks like your right. Lady at the dmv said I had no choice. I guess she was misinformed.

Alright, so they'll ask me at the DMV when I renew it though right?

It will be comedy to see reactions from soccer moms getting rejected at TSA.

The only problem I have with it, is that the Feds gave feet dragging states like Oregon an extension instead of forcing them to upgrade their dirt old systems and processes. I have a compliant DL from Colorado yet Oregon's isn't, so it's a step backwards if you move to a non-compliant state.

This is crazy some are just finding out about this. I got mine almost 5 years ago.
Where does it state you need both the star ID and a passport ? A passport should be the highest form of ID for a civilian.

              According to this article

What does this mean for travelers? Beginning October 1, 2020, travelers who present a driver's license that is not REAL ID compliant will not be permitted to fly. They'll have to bring another form of acceptable ID to the airport instead or be turned away. The list of acceptable IDs includes a passport; a military ID; a border ID card; a trusted traveler card, such as Global Entry; a permanent resident card; and other documents.

A passport is all you really need.

It seems to me it’s just a money grab.
