I believe The REAL MOTOR CITY COBRA was ahead on all three scorecards when he stopped in the 14th vs Ray Leonard

Just because someone was ahead 12 rounds into a 15 rounder does not mean they would win a 12 rounder.

Often boxers are playing the long game and waiting for the last few rounds to make their move. If it were a 12 rounder they'd make the move earlier and the result would be the same.

However some examples that come to mind are-

      Leonard vs Hearns I
      Johnson vs Willard
      Pretty much any Marciano fight

Henry Armstrong vs. Davey Day Welterweight Championship 1939 15rd fight. Both combatants were lightweights. Armstrong not wanting to risk his lightweight Title against Day. Davey Day fought Armstrong half blind, one eye completely closed and other just a squint from the 6th rd to the 12th Day was ahead, and Armstrong was ready to collapse from sheer overextended exhaustion. The referee stopped the fight at 2:49 of the 12th rd. as Day was getting up from a punch to his blind side, and looked at Armstrong's bloody face and said, "You can rest now" preventing Armstrong from losing. Go to history of the top three fighters McLarnin, Ross and Canzoneri and read exactly who was Davey Day. GO TO EBAY AND PUT IN SEARCH "DAVEY DAY AND HENRY ARMSTRONG", THERE ARE THREE PIC OF MR. DAY EACH HAS A STORY IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF BOXING.He left Armstrong severely beaten, he broke Lou Amber's jaw in a non-title fight, he knocked out the #1 welterweight contender Pedro Montanez, He beat Sammy Angott. The N.B.A. stripped Amber's of his title because he wouldn't fight Day for the title 1940. Canzoneri, Zivic, Jenkins were all saved by Mike Jacobs, not allowing any of them to fight Davey Day. Day was in the same stable with Ross, also, preventing him from being the real Lightweight Champion, instead of the assistant lightweight Champion. Ross never had to defend his Lightweight Title after beating Canzoneri. Day was his policemen, you had to get through Davey to fight Ross, and nobody could do it from 1934 to 1938.
