Albert Riera has backed clubmate Fernando Torres to win European Footballer of the Year.
The Spanish wideman thinks his international teammate should pip the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi when the award is announced in November.

Torres scored 33 goals in his debut season in English football, then followed it up by netting the winner in the European Championship final.

Riera said: "I am doing good things alongside Fernando Torres, who is a partner and a good friend. To me he should win the Ballon d'Or."

Meanwhile, an injury to Diego Capel means the Liverpool new boy is back in the international fold after missing out on a place in Euro 2008.

"They called me on Tuesday and I arrived as quickly as possible because a call-up fills you with joy and makes you believe," Riera added.

"Even though I was upset not to be part of the European Championships squad, I was convinced I would have played my part.

"But regretting and thinking of the past is useless, you have to be focused on what's to come."

I wouldn't say it was a joke, because Messi was a much better player. this year Barca have ****ed up but not him. Overall he will end up with a much better career. Just look at his age!

Roni did score the goal in UCL final but bottled it when it came to pens in both the semis and the final. When the going gets tough, C Roni does bottle it. Just look at his performances for his national team. He goes missing in big games alot. Plus the way he ****ted on Utd was funny for us to watch! He made a mockery of them and virtually nominated himself for the Real bid. Shame on the scum fans!

Tbh it is only between him and Torres and very very close. But I would say torres not because I am a 'pool fan beut because when the going gets tough he doesn't bottle it. Roni was nowhere to be seen in Euro's and isn't even best player for his nation! Deco ran the show. Scored a **** load of goals in EPL, but take away the pens (Torres took none) and he is level with Adebayour and Torres. hwoever for Fernando it was his first season and a record for a foreigner in a debut season. He broke horseface's record!

Plus we have this season to consider as it is POTY, not POTS. Both have been injured but Nando has hit the floor running with 5 goals and joint EPL top scorer already. When you consider last season, as well as what has happened over summer and this season then it has to be the one and only El
Ni�o.

In the EPL last seaons Torres had 24 and least than 4 assist I think

In the UCL Ronaldo had 8 goals and Torres had 6
