  • Why do some fighters' primes differ?

How does it differ from person to person? Like Floyd is 32 and he looked quicker and sharp as ever and Pernell was done by that time?

Whitaker made his debut at 20 and was fighting world class opposition on a consistent basis right up until he started slipping going into the Rivera fights. After he unconvincingly beat Rivera he gave Oscar a close bout (which I scored for Sweet Pea) and then drug problems, poor training regime and inactivity finished him off completely. Floyd's been training consistently his entire career, his body is clean and he hasn't met anywhere near the same calibre of opposition that Whitaker did.

Basically, fighters primes differ. Not sure why but it's the same in every sport, everybody peeks at different times.

it depends on how much punishment the fighter takes, pernall caught a lot of punches with the side of his head and mayweather on the other hand blocked a lot of shots

Some fighters use there speed/reflexes to win after 30+ these just drop off normally, they fail to adapt and drop off ala Jones. For crafty thinking fighters there primes can come alot later from gathered experience, like Bhop that guy's prime seems to have been late 30's..

Also you get the ones like Tyson who drink, rape and generally dont treat themselves well who just leave there prime rapidly because of this.

Lifestyles. how you take care of yourself. Also the way you train, the way you fight.

            Mayweather 32
            Hopkins 45
            Tarver 41
            Mosley 38

These guys don't drink or smoke, they live a healthy life. That lifestyle made them fight for so long against top competition.

Julio Caesar Chavez lost to DLH at 32 but people said he was old and past prime. That's not true, the drinking between fights put him past prime.

Ricky Hatton is only 31 years old but the drinking will cut his career short.

Miguel Cotto is another heavy drinker and i'm sure the P-Ricans can shed light on this. Only 28 years old and he's already having stamina problems.

You can blame it on the "wars" or the "top competition", but if you don't take care of yourself, even C class fighters will get to you.

Whitaker was on drugs and probably took more punishment in his career by the time he reached 32 than Mayweather did

                Peoples priorities change.

They trade there passion for glory, more of a mental thing than a physical one.

Fighters have different primes because people are different. Why would fighters primes be alike when there ain't two completly alike persons on this planet?

pernell was doing drugs and living badly, while floyd doesn't even touch alcohol.

also sweet p took tougher fights and actually had wars. sweet p is a complete boxer, while floyd is almost completely defensive.
