In California permanent separation means physical separation and a communication of intent to the other spouse that you don’t intend to resume the marital relationship. That is all that is required.

What would stop the permanent separation is reconciliation and you move back together to resume the marriage.

She wasn't quite an ex when the money was won, though. Divorce before winnings and it's all his.

It happened to this one guy. Divorced his wife and several years later he won a huge jackpot. He obviously got to keep every penny. She went to social media saying how she wouldn't go back to him if he paid her (lying ass bltch :lol: )

Married people have to split the assets/debts by 1/2 unless there are penalties for being shady. This is known well before people get married.
