I think it's sensible to get the images out there so people have a deeper think about it.
To be sure "The Mirror's" audience probably aren't the kind of people that ask a lot of existential questions. I wouldn't prefer these actions go unreported, but just reported by "objective" journalists trying to get at the facts, not paparazzi trying to make domestic violence into a celebrity scandal when its an epidemic. How women are being treated threatens to undermine the very fabric of our armed forces.

I don't think it's enough to report these egregious actions from a rag magazine, I think its more important we see respected figures in the media acknowledging what we all know to be true, women are treated like second class citizens. They can be choked, raped, and treated like animals and yet all we can get on this is tabloid reporting?

I think the media can do better, way better.

Violence against women

Intimate partner and sexual violence against women

Fact sheet N°239
November 2012

Key facts:

- Violence against women - particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women - are major public health problems and violations of women's human rights.

- A WHO multi-country study found that between 15–71% of women aged 15- 49 years reported physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner at some point in their lives.

-These forms of violence can result in physical, mental, sexual, reproductive health and other health problems, and may increase vulnerability to HIV.

- Risk factors for being a perpetrator also include low education, past exposure to child maltreatment or witnessing violence in the family, harmful use of alcohol, attitudes accepting of violence and gender inequality.

- Risk factors for being a victim of intimate partner and sexual violence include low education, witnessing violence between parents, exposure to abuse during childhood and attitudes accepting violence and gender inequality.

- In high-income settings, school-based programmes to prevent relationship violence among young people (or dating violence) are supported by some evidence of effectiveness.

- In low-income settings, other primary prevention strategies, such as microfinance combined with gender equality training and community-based initiatives that address gender inequality and communication and relationship skills, hold promise.

- Situations of conflict, post conflict and displacement may exacerbate existing violence and present new forms of violence against women.

I realize this report will not move many on this site, but I could care a less. I have two precious daughters and the thought of some warped guy abusing either one of them regardless of his rationale makes me sick to my stomach.

I blame BD, he made it cool to pimp slap a woman, youths looked up to him. I'm pretty sure he was the childhood hero of Mayweather and Broner.

Default "The violence behind closed doors"

Quote:
New figures published on Thursday offer a chilling insight into the violence and abuse that goes on behind closed doors. According to the data, two million people in England and Wales suffered sexual assault, violence, threats or abuse at the hands of a partner or family member last year.

Despite a much greater focus on domestic crime by police, it is a number that has barely changed in four years.

The data comes from the Crime Survey of England and Wales (CSEW) which regularly asks people about their personal experience of crime. Breaking the numbers down reveals that 1.2 million victims were women and 800,000 were men, a far higher proportion of male sufferers than people might have thought. Domestic abuse is not just a women's issue.

The survey suggests, though, that it is an issue of the poor, the sick and the separated.

Some 1.2 million women suffered domestic violence in England and Wales last year
The pain of relationship breakdown is vivid in these figures. Among couples who had separated, 21% of women and 11% of men were victims of domestic abuse. For those in a marriage, the figure is 3% for both sexes.

Women who are unemployed are more than twice as likely to have experienced domestic violence or abuse in the last year than those with a job, 15% compared with 6%. For men it is 7% against 5%.

There is a clear correlation between lower incomes and higher risks of being a victim of domestic abuse. For men and women with incomes of less than £10,000 a year, the proportion affected last year was 9% and 12% respectively. Among those earning £50,000 or more, the risk falls to 4%.

Those with a long-standing illness or disability are also in greater danger - 13% of women in that category and 7% of men suffered domestic abuse last year compared with a general likelihood of 7% and 5% respectively.

These are often repeat crimes. A fifth of victims say they were affected at least three times, almost a third said they had suffered domestic abuse at least twice.

Burner's post is on point, and your response to it was not an argument against posting such pictures, it was an argument against doing ANYTHING to prevent domestic violence which has not succeeded in deterring it in the past, including talking about it publicly.

Actually no friend, my post wasn't about doing nothing. Please point out where I suggest doing nothing is preferable seriously? Your post makes zero sense. My point was that the sheer volume of pictures, videos etc on the net that depict violence against women do nothing to deter their attackers. Its my contention that the public seeing Nigella getting choked does little to raise awareness. How many women have we heard of getting abused and the stats are rising they aren't diminishing.

What raises awareness is prominent celebrities and politicians getting involved, as well as families having honest conversations, and men understanding that physical violence is no way to settle a dispute with a woman. Get it?
