  • Deontay Wilder (And The Boxing World) Pronounces His Own Surname Incorrectly!?

The adjective "wilder" is pronounced Wild-Ur, when used as the comparative degree of the world "wild", but the name "Wilder" is instead supposed to be pronounced Will-Duh.

An archaic word "wilder" which has the same meaning as the word "bewilder" can be heard on this page by clicking the small speaker icon > https://www.dictionary.com/browse/wilder < That's also the correct pronunciation of Deontay Wilder's surname.

In effect, does Deontay Wilder pronounce his own surname incorrectly, along with the rest of the boxing world? Instead of the correct name pronunciation, we've been using the pronunciation of the comparative degree of the word "wild"!

Colombian accent in this video but another example of what's closer to the correct pronunciation of the name than what we've been using so far>

So now the question is should the network commentators and boxing world in general adopt the correct pronunciation of the name "Wilder" or should they stick to the mispronounced version which is applicable to the adjective "wilder"?

Not necessarily, unless it's an invented word. If it's an old name like "Wilder" then it already has a long history of the correct pronunciation. e.g. all the way back in 1651 there was a mayor called William Wilder so the name has been around a long time with a lengthy lineage.

Imagine if they pronounced Canelo Alvarez as Cane-eye-low All-vee-rise

The guy says feetwork instead of footwork, nobody should be surprised if he can't say his own name correctly.

This isn't even his family's original name, it was forced upon them through slavery. I applaud him and his family if they intentionally decided to pronounce it differently.
