Pacquiao, Roach win US paper's top award

Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach were named by USA Today as 2010’s Fighter of the Year and Trainer of the Year, respectively, resident fight scribe Bob Velin wrote in his article that came out in the paper’s Dec. 29 issue.

“For excelling while serving his people on two continents, Pacquiao is USA Today’s Fighter of the Year,” wrote Velin.

Pacquiao won his seventh and eight world titles at the expense of Ghanaian Joshua Clottey and Mexican Antonio Margarito in March and in later in November before huge crowds at Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

In between fights, Pacquiao was voted as congressman from Sarangani during the May national elections.

Roach’s winning ways also didn’t escape the attention of the paper, citing Roach’s triumphant association not only with the Filipino but with Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez and prospect Jose Benavidez as reason why he deserves the accolade.

The last few years, Pacquiao has received awards and citations almost from every boxing body and publication for all his victories in the ring.

The Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine have named him the Boxer of the Decade (2000-2009).

Pacquiao and Roach are joining hands once against in May next year as the Filipino icon battles Shane Mosley.

Problem is, nobody in USA TODAY would know who Sergio is so of course they would pick Pac. It's the popular thing to do right now. Not saying its right... but everyone's doing it...
