One thing I will say for Whitaker is that he would probably be the bigger, stronger, more athletic fighter (yes that's even if you made Willie Pep a natural 135'er).

Whitaker had a very educated jab and his lateral movement was excellent. He has tree trunks for legs so he could undoubtedly move all day on Pep without fatiguing drastically. Whitaker did have decent power when he planted his feet (evidenced in his fights with Nazario and Hurtado).

It'd be a razor thin match i'm sure, but i'll go with Whitaker simply because I've seen him at his best.
- -Pea noticeably fatigued running from the pressure of Ramirez in his first title challenge.

He changed his defense style to more stationary and clowning. If he wants to hit Pep he's gonna have to move.

Oh! So you would cheat Pep just because Whitaker got jobbed against Chavez. I see, I see.

if its a p4p matchup then its very tough to call. How good was pep at 126 vs how good was Whitaker at 135.

I think Whitaker though, by a little bit. at 135 he probably beats everyone not named Duran. there's a few that I would give a good chance though. arguello, Ortiz, Chavez in his prime etc

Fair point. A good big man will usually beat a good smaller man.

- -Pep fought Robinson in the greatest AMA fight in history and acquitted himself admirably in spite of the loss.

Pep prime years between 126-135 and Pea first title challenge at 130 where he obviously needed more development.

U making up false equivalencies priceless. Cue in the monkeys with "but we say he beat Oscar!"

Willie was an exciting offensive and defensive freestylist whereas Pea concentrated on his clowning defense. Ain't gonna work vs Precrash Pep.

Gold star 4 U obfustification.

Got U granny and U tranny whooping Willie too, eh?

Pep said Robinson wiped him out.

We talked for awhile. I was afraid he would laugh at me if I asked him if he fought Sugar Ray Robinson. Finally I said, “Willie, there’s a rumor in town that you once fought Sugar Ray in Norwich.”

Without hesitation he said, “That’s true. I fought him for the Du-Well A.C. It was 1938, and that fight was upstairs in a downtown building. Sugar Ray fought under the name of Ray Roberts. Ray always used that name when he fought in the amateurs.”

Willie continued, “Ray’s real name was Walker Smith. He wiped me out that night, and it was my only amateur loss. I was a flyweight at 105 pounds, and Sugar Ray, a welterweight.”

According to this Hartford Courant newspaper article Robinson only weighed 1 lb more than Pep that night.

Pep was the greatest featherweight, devoid of a punch.

Therefore, I take Whitaker.
