Early last month, news broke that WBA junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana was the latest high-profile fighter considering joining the talented stable of trainer Robert Garcia down in Oxnard, California. Already having spent time working with the likes of Brandon Rios, Antonio Margarito, Nonito Donaire, and Kelly Pavlik, amongst others, Garcia seemed open to adding Maidana to the mix but was unsure when the rugged Argentinean was going to be making his way to camp. WHY? What "Special" Has Rios, Margarito, Donaire & Pavlik Done?!!?
Maybe Garcia's services are cheap, less purse going to the fighter.... but maybe there's something we don't know about Garcia & Company. But there's no denying his stable of fighters have been less than stellar in the ring of late. Rios was all bark and no fight, looking like crap in his last fight against a no-name tomato can, Margarito got dismantled by Cotto, and previously knocked out by Mosley, and beaten to a pulp by Pacquiao. Donaire is not making headlines, and Pavlik is a shot fighter with a plethora of personal challenges, we all hope he conquers. So what does Garcia's team bring to the table for Maidana, who with the exception of fighting out of his weight class, losing to Alexander, he's on the verge of greatness, staying in his 140 class. I would rather see Maidana train wreck Rios, but that won't happen now, fighting out of the same camp.... just a strange choice for Maidana. Way too many other options that make more sense. He could have landed with Freddie Roach, in a stable of Pacquiao and Khan. He could have landed with Mosley's team lead by Nazir Richardson, since Mosley is all but thru in the ring. Ridiculous to land with Garcia's team.
