In 1967, King was convicted of second degree murder for the second killing after he was found guilty of stomping to death an employee, Sam Garrett, who owed him $600.”

Don’t know how it’s justifiable homicide when the business is illegal...like if someone robs a trap house and I shoot him, that’s not justifiable lol
How could there be no sentence if he was found guilty of second degree murder?

      He freaking killed 2 people.

Even if he didn't, he did enough awful things for everyone to hate him.

But he did. He killed two other human beings and he's still walking around spending stolen money.

Believe it or not, you can actually get probation for second degree murder with the right judge.

The whole reason behind second degree is there wasn't initial intent to kill them ie self-defense. So in short it wasn't a planned event. It all depends on how the judge views the circumstances of the case.

He killed someone who was committing a robbery so it would be pretty easy to show that there was a threat. Jury can convict, but judge does the sentencing.

        Strange but true.

Okay so how is shooting someone in the back justifiable homicide? I thought that only worked if cops shot unarmed black people. Did King pay someone off, have a good lawyer or use his gift of gab to talk his way out of that one?

I thought the story was they were robbing his gambling hall so they could be perceived as a lethal threat especially if they had a weapon and it was pointed at or they threatened anyone there. It doesn't even have to be him. It would be easy to sell he feared for his life.
You don't have to be facing someone (at least legally) to consider them a threat. It's not like you are going to wait around for them to act upon you especially if they are acting on others in a dangerous situation.

The jury did convict him. The judge is the one you would question as he had all the options up to I think 20 years for that crime (at least in Illinois don't know about Michigan). For example, the Chicago cop got basically 7 years for shooting that kid 16 times but he could have done much less or more.

King or his lawyers most likely sold the fact/opinion that he was scared for his life and the judge bought it. They ruled it justifiable.

Actually, that case I am not surprised but the second guy that died was basically a drug addict who owed King money and they called the beating a "demonic assault" where he was bouncing the guy's head off the pavement and kicking him in the head as a cop on the scene reported.. He only got 4 years for that one, got out in 1971 then King got famous.

That seemed to be a pretty light sentence as it wasn't a fight, but a straight up beating that caused death. The guy was zero threat to King unlike the first case where he was in the middle of someone committing a felony.

Apparently in that case, there was witness intimidation and attempted bribery.

He actual got a full pardon in the 80's for that one by the governor of Ohio. Crazy.

                  killed two people

shot a man in the back for robbing his illegal gambling operation, and stomped a man who owed him money to death. right out in the open.
