  • Unexpected/strange amateur fights and wins..

Following on from the Porter beating Usyk thread, i thought it might be a fun thread to make one about fights you can't imagine now that actually took place in the amateurs.

I heard Nonito Donaire beat James Kirkland as an amateur.

Also Calzaghe stopped Chris Byrd as an amateur around 1992.

Ryan Farrag beat Luke Campbell, not too long before Campbell won Olympic gold. Pretty Sure Juergen Braehmer knocked out Ricky Hatton inside a round also

I believe Todd Foster beat Chris Byrd during the 88 Olympic Trials.

The 139lb US Olympic Trials was nuts, not so much unexpected, but deep with talent. It had Shane Mosley (future 3-division champ), Vernon Forrest (future 2-division champ), Terron Millett (future 140lb champ) & Stevie Johnston (future 135lb champ) in the final 4.

              Forrest beat Mosley
              Johnston beat Millett

Forrest beat Johnston in the finals & the boxoffs.

Why is that strange? Kindelan is one of the GOAT Cuban amateurs ?

what's strange is he lost to a 17 year old Amir khan.

iirc Floyd dropped a decision to Augie Sanchez. Believe they had quite the rivalry as amateurs, but Floyd won all their fights (4 or 5 total iirc) except the one.

Floyd beat Eric Morel, who'd later go on to make the 96 US Olympic team.
