Khan is blessed with elite level skills, but he learned a long time ago that his chin is his achilles heel, and all attempts to shore up his defence to protect his chin weren't working.
He got chin-checked by Prescott early of course, but he was also wobbled badly by Maidana, then after Garcia in 2012, it was clear his career was limited at the top level.
So he decided to go to 147 and cash out with a payday against Maywweather or Pac, but after 2012, he had to manage his career carefully to avoid getting Garcia'd again while maintaining his claim to a Mayeather/Pac payday - ie avoid taking risks with a series of journeymen (Molina, Diaz, Collina), light-punching opponents (Algieri), and names whose career had gone off a cliff for whatever reason (Alexander). All carefully chosen.
Then of course the Canelo payday came along, and he took it. It was his career in a nutshell - boxing beautifully, then chin-checked, this time in a brutal fashion. He had the built-in defence that it was above his weight-class, so shouldn't 'count' in any way against his qualification for Pac (Mayweather having retired).
So top level skills yes, but a fatal flaw in his punch resistance which meant he was always going to fail at the highest levels, then managing around that...for 6 years now, and counting.

By that logic Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara, and Josesito Lopez are PPV stars
I hate how Khan has this "regular fish in a small pond" mentality. Khan seems fine fighting guys ranked lower than him. Why isn't Khan fighting the top 5 guys in each org? I honestly believe Khan could beat Clayton, Kavaliauskas, Jessie Vargas, Broner, Abduqaxorov, James, and Ugas. Beating them would mean more than beating Sam Vargas or Phil lo Greco. Right now Khan is ranked 11th in the WBC and 5 in the WBA. Pretty low for a guy with 'star power'. I want to see him do better.
And i do agree khan could beat those fighters but i do believe khan will fight for a title soon after a couple of these tune ups after being knocked out cold and 2 years of inactivity
