1.) Do you know how to just make a cross-bow? You'd have to google search, and I'm pretty sure they can find out everything you searched for unless you like destroy your hard drive.
2.) The materials used in making the crossbow you'd have to purchase. Even if paid for in cash, it wouldn't be hard to narrow it down, and catch you on camera at the register of a store purchasing said materials.
Of course - this all depends on whether or not you are looked at as an initial person of interest. If the victim was in someway related to you, or within your social circle, etc. If you just picked out a completely random person to murder, especially a few states away from where you live, then you'd be good regarding the above.
BUT, if the cops in anyway found the slightest reason to investigate you as a POI, they'd start compiling circumstantial evidence (that can be just as, if not more, compelling than physical evidence).
