            • Fox News Poll: 54 Percent of Americans Say Trump Should Be Impeached

By Benjamin Fearnow On 12/15/19 at 10:55 AM EST
A Fox News poll released Sunday morning found a majority of Americans, 54 percent, said President Donald Trump should be impeached, a vote the House is likely to pass this coming week.

The latest Fox News poll conducted last week found a majority of U.S. adults of all political affiliations say Trump abused his power in office, with 50 percent of Americans saying he should be impeached and removed as president. An additional 4 percent say he should be impeached but not removed from office. Those surveyed rejected the claim touted by Trump and Republicans that U.S. presidents typically ask foreign governments for help in investigating political rivals, with only 22 percent of respondents saying that defense checks out. A similar majority, 52 percent, said the Trump administration has not cooperated enough with the House impeachment inquiry.

The slight upward tick in those supporting impeachment comes as a result of a new high in independent voters, 45 percent, who favor impeachment, up from 38 percent in October.

About 16 percent more voters said Republican lawmakers just want to protect Trump politically instead of reviewing the accusations which led to the two articles of impeachment against him -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Just fewer than half of Americans surveyed, 48 percent, said they believe Trump obstructed Congress, while only 34 percent said they did not. And 45 percent of respondents said they believe Trump committed bribery. But more than half of Americans, 53 percent, said Trump abused the power of the Oval Office.

Trump has previously railed against the Fox News and several of the cable news network's less enthusiastically pro-Trump anchors and hosts. On Saturday night, Trump blasted Fox News for "interviewing sleazebag & totally discredited" former FBI Director James Comey, which aired Sunday morning.

"Don't know why foxNews wants to be more like them? They'll all die together as other outlets take their place. Only pro Trump Fox shows do well. Rest are nothing. How's Shep doing?" Trump tweeted Saturday, referencing former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, who left the network in October.

Given the 3 percentage point margin of error, the share of Americans who want to see Trump impeached or removed from office has not changed since the beginning of the impeachment inquiry earlier this fall. Forty-one percent of those surveyed by Fox News said they do not want to see Trump impeached, which has not changed a single percentage point. While those saying they want to see Trump impeached, but not removed, also has not changed from 4 percent.

An overwhelming majority of Democrats, 85 percent, said they support removing or impeaching the president. While a nearly identical percentage of Republicans said the exact opposite.

In October, Trump lashed out against Fox News for a similar poll which showed a slight majority of Americans support his impeachment.

              • 5.9 million people off food stamps under trump!!

5.9 Million Individuals Off Food Stamps Under Trump

More than 5.9 million individuals dropped off food stamps since President Donald Trump assumed office in February 2017, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The most up-to-date USDA data shows that 5,975,736 people discontinued using food stamps, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), between February 2017— when Trump completed his first full month in office— and September 2019.

Household participation in the food stamp program has gone down as well, with 2,493,912 households discontinuing their participation in SNAP, according to the USDA.

There are currently 36,322,055 individuals and 18,443,991 households enrolled in the food stamp program. Still, USDA officials said those numbers are “preliminary” due to the 2018 government shutdown, which affected food stamp administration at the beginning of 2019.

When Trump took office, 42,297,791 individuals and 20,937,903 households were enrolled in SNAP.

Individual and household participation in SNAP had consistently declined overall since 2013, when the Obama administration was in power, and enrollment in the program reached its highest point in U.S. history.

At the Great Recession’s peak during former President Barack Obama’s first term in office, enrollment in SNAP grew by 135 percent and cost taxpayers $78 billion.

Food stamp enrollment plummeted after state legislatures passed work requirement reform measures to curb dependency on welfare, requiring food stamp recipients to work, volunteer, attend school, or receive job training for 20 hours per week.

Enrollment has continued to decline under Trump, but the Trump administration has taken welfare reform measures a step further by taking work requirement legislation found in the states nationwide.

Breitbart News reported that the USDA recently finalized a SNAP proposal stating that those who are able-bodied and between the ages of 18-49 and without children or dependents who receive food stamps for more than three months in a 36-month period must work, go to school, receive job training, or volunteer to receive benefits.

The rule does not apply to those who are over 50-years-old, disabled, pregnant, or caretakers for children.

The law allows states to waive out of this time limit requirement due to poor economic conditions, but before the rule was put into place, areas with unemployment as low as 2.5 percent were eligible for waivers, according to the USDA.

The USDA estimates that approximately 755,000 people would discontinue participating in the nation’s food stamp program under the work requirements rule, and the rule would reduce federal spending by $7.9 billion over five years.

The proposal is expected to go into effect on April 1, 2020.
