Prevention over consequences. Prison sentences would be another insane burden for US taxpayers and you know within a couple years there would be some far-left movement to free them all into southwestern US cities & a violent crime wave.

The Israeli-Palestine border wall cut down illegal crossings and small scale violence massively just by having a physical barrier in place. Doesn't even matter whose "side" you were on, just having an established barrier instead of anarchy improved the situation by every metric.

& it's not like you can't take them down decades later if necessary. The Berlin wall wore out its necessity eventually but on the flip side it's existence may have helped prevent the breakout of WW3 by turning tank battles into the occasional chucked rock.
