lets break down how stirverne actually got to #3 according to tbrb.

rankings before the first arreola-stirverne fight both guys are unranked. stirverne wins and they rank him #10. that seems fair. 2 meh guys fighting so why not rank the winner. has he beaten any of their top 10 fighters? no.

then stirverne doesnt fight for a year and moves up to #5 somehow. guess lots of people lost in front of him but did he actually do anything...no. has he beaten any of their top 10 fighters yet? no.

then he beats unranked arreola again and moves up to #4. has he beaten any of their top 10 fighters yet? no.

then he doesn't fight again and moves up to #3. has he beaten any of their top 10 fighters yet? no.

    he loses to wilder.

so stirverne literally beat no top 10 guys and he was able to get to #3. hell if he had stayed inactive long enough maybe he becomes #1!

If Wilder beats Fury (which is a VERY tough fight, Leonard was gone for years came back and took Hagler to the limit, if you’re elite you’re elite. So you haters might as well say it now. Never mind that Ortiz and Fury are far superior wins than Takam, Parker and Povetkin (the same juicer Wilder was going to fight IN RUSSIA, that just went life and death with The Ghost Of David Price). But you biased clowns will hate anyway because that’s all you’re good for. So start hating in this thread now get it out of your system.
38 is, objectively speaking, old for a professional fighter. Many will retire long before that and those that do continue inevitably face a decline in physical attributes from their prime.

Almost three years is a long time to spend out of the ring. There's evidence that many or perhaps most fighters fail to regain their former levels after similar periods out and even Ali felt he made a mistake taking only 2 tune up fights before facing Frazier and he never ballooned to 27 stone during his boxing ban.

It's not 'hating' to acknowledge these factors, it's rational. So why do you react with such hostility and seek to label anyone that raises valid questions as a hater instead of addressing them, acknowledging where they may have a point and then countering it where appropriate?

To me, threads like this don't add to positive discussion, they just perpetuate an endless exchange of insults and trolling. Just respect that others won't always share your view and make an effort to see where they're coming from?

Excellent post. A great insight into the sorry state of the ranking system and the way that it can be manipulated. Interesting to note what he did after the fight with Wilder also when assessing just how valid that ranking was.

also boxing is a strange sport where the less you show people the more intrigued they become by the mystery of "is this guy good???" if stirverne had fought more he would have been found out so fighting less actually worked for him. it kept the mystery alive but we found out that he was actually crap(those that saw the austin/king fights already knew). we wanted to believe so we ignored our own rankings and his previous fights. even as arreola was exposed as the bum he always was we kept pretending it was stirverne that ruined him instead of saying wait who did arreola ever beat? oh seth mitchell check!

p.s. is it any surprise wilder later fought arreola in a "title" fight.

Well, maybe now, maybe, but we're talking about what was happening a few years ago. Charles Farrell is interesting on what King was up to with Stiverne and Molina:

But everyone picked Wilder to beat Ortiz, so you're lying there.

Nearly everyone is picking Wilder to beat this version of Fury as well. So again, you're wrong.

Povetkin never went life and death against Price in the slightest. Price landed one left hook whilst getting dominated and then knocked out. So again, you're wrong.

All in all, a really **** post. But I expect that from Americans. Always lying, always talking rubbish and making things up in their head.

its called preemptive damage control..once the fight was signed ortiz stunk....but before it was wilder was "scared" and avoiding a "real top 5 HW who is skilled and a southpaw".....
