  • Shoulder popping out from sparring?

My right shoulder popped out for the first time in August 2011 while sparring in the 3rd round. It was out for maybe 30 seconds to a minute then popped back in. It was really sore the next few days, and I rested it over a month before sparring again. (I am orthodox btw)

The next time I sparred it seemed okay, but was sore afterwards. I sparred again a few weeks after that and it popped out again. It popped back in after only a few seconds, and was sore again for a few days. (I am fine hitting the bags, and mitts. Its seems to only pop out during sparring b/c not every punch lands.)

I asked my uncle about it, who is a doctor in another state. And he emailed me these shoulder exercises that use resistance bands and dumbells. I didn't start doing these excercises until a month ago, when my shoulder started to feel not-so-good even without sparring.

My shoulder feels a little bit stronger. I sparred this week and my shoulder felt like it wanted to come out a couple times but did not. I could feel it move around after missing a couple right hands. It seems like the strength gained from the excercises prevented it from fully coming out. However, it was sore again a couple days afterwards. The kind of soreness where it hurts to move my arm in certain positions.

I don't mind the soreness, as I can recover in a few days. I'd would be actually happy if my shoulder never pops out again and is just sore after every time.

I was just wondering if anyone has had the same experience or knows someone that does. And what can be done to prevent it.

    Thanks.

i had this issue, still do..

it will always be a danger.

but there is something you can do besides surgery.

start punching correctly on every shot.

    no looping shots!!!

shoot straight, turn the shots over all the way and don't throw rights in to rights.

adjust your angle with your feet not you waist.

that pretty much handled the problem for me.

you need to let it heal as well. i know you might not want to take any time off but both of my shoulders now have calcification in them due to injuries not healing properly.

I had this problem, this was due to a motorcycle accident years back. I understand how you feel as it is very frustrating having to stop in the middle of sparring or not be able to perform 100%. My shoulder would slip out even on the heavy bags. However, I did notice if I warmed up, shadow box, do a few rotational excercises before sparring it would reduce the chances of it slipping out. I also took some joint supplements like Animal Flex or Osteo Bi-flex to help ease the pain but didn't notice any drastic changes.

Even after all this, I was training for a fight and my shoulder slipped out a week before so I had to postpone it. Decided to go with surgery, took about 6-8 months to start boxing again, haven't sparred much and but when I did, it hasn't popped out. I think now it is more of a psychological thing. Good luck!

i too have this problem. ive had it all my life. i want to two physiotherapists that told me to do rotator cuff exercises, i went to a shoulder specialist, who took one look at it and put me on a waiting list for surgery. 3 months out and im feeling good. im back to normal, doing some light exercises and i can see a big difference in where the shoulder sits on my body compared to the other arm (its in both). my surgeon also said that if i did not have the surgery i would probably develop crippling arthritis in my late 30's. now that i have it sorted ive started noticing all sorts of postural problems created by it.

its possible that your problem is caused by a rotaor cuff problem, or lax ligaments. either way rest. lots of rest and ice, then start working your way up with really light rotator cuff exercises. for me all the dislocating caused damage to the capsule that should hold it in place so i think i had reconstructive surgery on that.

its really important you get it looked at quickly by a sports therapist or other professional soon, otherwise you will end up like me.

Thanks for all the comments! I actually sparred again today, it did not pop out but I felt it move around again. I'm expecting it to be sore again for a few days.

I will stop sparring for a while and rest it. I'll continue doing my shoulder exercises and researching more to add to my routine.

I always wanted to get my shoulder scanned or one of those MRI things. Not sure how to go about that though.

Your shoulder pops out of place because of weak shoulder muscles. Another reason could be tearing of muscles, tendon, and ligaments. You have to have it checked out for any possible tearing. If there is no tearing, then you need to rehabilitate and strengthen your shoulders. This includes warm up, strengthening and range of motion exercises, and stretching of the shoulder and all attached muscles like pectorals, trapezius, infraspinatus and triceps.

stop all together. stop for a week, then build back up with light exercises. for my MRI i just went to a doctor and got refereed to a shoulder specialist / surgeon. he then put me in for one. see a specialist. now

I went to the doctor today, and he checked out my shoulder. He referred me to get an MRI. There going to check out my insurance and then call back for the MRI.

                  Thanks again.

My shoulder dislocated the first time during a street fight hahaha

then another time at the beach trying swim against a wave..

                    it's wack.

make sure u dont bench press at least with heavy weight/

and throw straight punches anything thrown upwards is risk of it popping out if u hit something that pushes your arm even more up
