  • Will the WBA force Thurman and Matthysse to unify?

The poster WBC WBA IBF brought this up in another thread.

Thurman is the Super champion and Matthysse is the "regular" champion. Ordering them to fight in order to have only one belt would have interesting repercussions.

That's something that the sanctioning bodies can do that is actually good for the sport: order fights to happen regardless of promoter and network rivalries.

No thats easy money for Thurman or any other top 10 welter for that matter. Goldenboy will do their usual and milk his so called title only feeding him non threats . Matthysse is a pretty average fighter with some pop. Nothing special he’s really a 140lb high level gatekeeper. At ww he’s definitely a step down from his peak. Plus hes not even as powerful at ww.

I'd rather see him fight the Machine then fighting Danny or Shawn again. Fun fight even though Thurman wins anyway he wants but Matthysse will come to fight and packs power.

Keith Thurman is probably praying for this to happen. Easy nights work and good money. Matthysse is past his best. He's been in too many wars.

That would be nice, to finally get rid of the worthless title. However, I don't think they honestly want to get rid of them. They talk a good game but in the end, more belts means more money to them and they want to keep them. They'll drag out unification until 2025.

They'll have to order it eventually because they actually do intend to eliminate all of the super titles, but it won't be any time soon.

The WBA changed their rules to make it clear that the world champion isn't automatically the mandatory to the super champion. So that alone gives the WBA more leeway to avoid calling for that fight for a year or two at least. Last I spoke to Mendoza, he promised by the end of 2019, all super titles would be gone. But that is still two years away.

That's one of the main reasons the sanctioning bodies exist. To mediate between rival promoters so fights that normally wouldn't happen can happen. But it's a delicate balance because the fans often side with the fighter when the fighter refuses to cooperate.

              They shouldn't mediate, though.

They should stick to their rankings and their rulebook and just order fights. Completely independent of the promoters.

That's what the IBF does. So most of the big stars avoid the IBF and you have a bunch of low level mandatory challengers.
