pensioners have nostalgia goggles. social life was more ordered during the USSR times; neighbors could leave their doors open, buildings weren't covered in graffiti by degenerates, less drunks and prostitutes on the street etc. i can sympathize with their thinking, but trust me nobody in Russia is foolish enough to trade social life for breadlines.

Because the gap in wealth is much higher now. Prices went up, wealth of the average population went down, and the “new russian” crooks known as Oligarchs and people with Government connections are wealthy as fcuk now. The gap is huge, and it is indeed a shlthole for the most part.
