Nice to hear that is the reason for the delay, usually PBA season finishes before Christmas...

now I think they are really serious about this one and I for one believe that we are among the Top 3 in Asian Basketball, and who knows maybe a well prepared, complete & cohesive team have a chance against China ...

To answer Chito's question who will stop Yao Ming, maybe no one can, but maybe he can be limited I could still remember Chito Loyzaga 6'3" defending against a 7'3" center of North Korea, so i guess nothing is impossible ...

Article I fished out from ABANTE about the RP 5 Pool...

Bugbugin sa tune-ups ang RP squad No pain, no gain.

(Melchor Turno)

Reyes to name candidates today

THE THRILLS and frills of guessing on who will make it to the national team go up another level today when coach Chot Reyes announces his initial choices during halftime of the first wildcard game today at the Araneta Coliseum.

Out of 140 players who have played in the ongoing Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup, Reyes will name 32 candidates for the team set to compete in several international competitions over the next three years.

The national team mentor will also name eight amateurs to bring the total of candidates to 40.

Considered shoe-ins in the team are Jayjay Helterbrand, Willie Miller, Tony dela Cruz, Nic Belasco and Eric Menk – players considered by Reyes as the best in their respective positions right now.

Also tipped to make the initial list are prolific scorers Danny Seigle, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Dondon Hontiveros, Kenneth Duremdes, John Arigo, James Yap and Mark Caguioa, playmaker Jimmy Alapag, big men Dennis Espino, Mark Telan, Yancy de Ocampo, Billy Mamaril, Rafi Reavis, Kerby Raymundo, Sonny Thoss and Rico Villanueva and enforcers Junthy Valenzuela, Rich Alvarez and Mark Pingris.

Heading the amateur prospects are 6-7 Anthony Washington, reigning UAAP and PBL MVP Arwind Santos, PBL top scorer Mark Cardona, Ateneo sentinel L.A. Tenorio and last year’s NCAA Rookie of the Year and MVP Gabby Espinas.

From the initial list will come the 18 pros and six amateurs Reyes is going to pick to join the national pool.

Chot names initial 40 cagers

By Joel Orellana, Reporter

FORTY players, eight from the amateur ranks, were named to the national men’s basketball pool on Sunday and will undergo a series of physical tests and interviews to land a spot on the team that will try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

National team head coach Chot Reyes made the announcement in a press briefing at the Araneta Coliseum, citing the players’ statistics and previous international experience and his consultation with the rest of the coaches in the Philippine Basketball Association that led to his drawing the list.

Six Asian Games campaigners were included in the pool—Eric Menk, Noy Castillo, Kenneth Duremdes, Dennis Espino, Dondon Hontiveros and Danny Ildefonso—with Ateneo de Manila University’s Japeth Aguilar as the youngest to be given an invitation.

“We limited the invitees to 31 years old and below,” said Reyes, adding that the physical tests will determine their conditioning, vertical leap, quickness, dexterity, and body fat percentage, among others.

“They will be tested in two weeks, and hopefully after that we can identify the players we need,” Reyes added.

Also getting invitations were Rommel Adducul, Jimmy Alapag, Don Allado, Richard Alvarez, John Arigo, Nic Belasco, Brandon Cablay, Mark Caguioa, Mike Cortez, Yancy de Ocampo, Tony de la Cruz; Jayjay Helterbrand, Billy Mamaril, Willie Miller, Ali Peek, Marc Pingris, Kerby Raymundo, Rafi Reavis, Renren Ritualo, Danny Seigle, Mark Telan, Joachim Thoss, Lordy Tugade, Junthy Valenzuela, Enrico Villanueva and James Yap.

Besides Aguilar, the 6-foot-9, 17-year-old son of former PBA player Peter, other amateur standouts included were the former’s Ateneo teammate LA Tenorio, La Salle’s Mark Cardona, FEU’s Arwind Santos, Gabby Espinas of Philippine Christian, former State U slotman Jay-Arr Reyes, Filipino American Anthony Washington and slam dunk artist Nino Canaleta of the University of the East.

Reyes clarified that the fitness tests will just be a part of the selection process, as the coaching staff will also interview all of the players.

“The player maybe superiorly fit but not that interested [in playing for the national team]. The interview will really matter,” said the Coca-Cola mentor, who made the final list Sunday after consulting with San Miguel coach Jong Uichico.

Reyes is eyeing Uichico, who handled the last all-pro team to the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea in 2002, as one of his assistants. Boyzie Zamar already is on the staff, having been recommended by the Basketball Association of the Philippines.

The Moro Lorenzo Gymnasium inside the Ateneo campus in Loyola will be the site of the fitness tests, according to Reyes.

, where the players will be given one-and-a-half hours to display their physical strengths.

Notable players who were left out of Reyes’ list were Jeffrey Cariaso, Rodney Santos, Victor Pablo, Marlou Aquino, Reynel Hugnatan, Olsen Racela, Johnny Abarrientos, Ronald Tubid and John Ferriols.

Overseas Pinoys pick RP team
THE GAME OF MY LIFE By Bill Velasco
The Philippine Star 01/10/2005

We literally received a flood of e-mail from readers of The Star and its website, philstar.com, in reaction to our invitation to recommend players for the new Philippine team that will be headed by Chot Reyes. Not surprisingly, an equal number of Filipinos overseas sent their votes, as well, showing heightened interest in the country’s campaign to overcome past disappointments in our favorite sport. Today, we give the absentee voters their due.

Dustin Cutchon ([email protected]), an IT analyst who has been keeping track of basketball developments all the way from England, writes:

"Greeting from friends here in the UK. We are behind Coach Chot and the Nationals (whoever they may be). My team: Jimmy Alapag, Jayjay Helterbrand and Willie Miller (he might have to improve his shooting) at point guard; Dondon Hontiveros, Renren Ritualo (although he might be too small), Kenneth Duremdes at shooting guard; Danny Siegle, Yancy De Ocampo, Tony dela Cruz and Mark Telan at small forward; Nic Belasco, Romel Adducul, Ali Peek and Enrico Villanueva at power forward; Eric Menk, Rafi Reavis, Danny Ildefonso (Arwind Santos can be a trainee)

"Let’s hope whatever team we perform would be happy to make all the sacrifices for the team and the country. Good luck! We are behind you all."

Comic strip cartoonist JC Reinoso ([email protected]), sent this missive all the way from Canada:

"I left Manila in 1996 and I’ve stayed here in Vancouver, BC ever since. It doesn’t mean I don’t miss the Philippines though (or its favourite sport)..far from it. When I left, Alvin Patrimonio was having his way on the court (in the paint and not outside), Alaska had a greyhound running unit on the way to a Grand Slam, and the few Fil-Ams present appeared to be legit.

"Nine years later, I can see some semblance of "hope in action" in terms of our country’s basketball program. While I (like countless others) felt greatly scandalized and outraged by recent events, I also felt a great boost about recent developments and the PBA’s valiant decision to step up to the plate, get involved, and hunker down to the task of regaining our once-lofty position in the sport.

"Even halfway around the planet, I’ve never stopped monitoring the news about our national team program. All I can say is that I’m very excited about all the possibilities with Chot Reyes at the helm. His "take no prisoners" approach and loathing of mediocrity will take him and his team of "executioners" far towards the Olympic goal."

From within the country, Kenneth Inocencio ([email protected]) harks back to Athens and our own international exposure with a warning:

"The Olympics showed a formula on how to win: 1. Teamwork 2. Motion offense 3. Players who can run, pass, defend and shoot and...

4. Shooters who really shoot the lights out

"I wish we can take Allan Caidic out of retirement. He’s the greatest shooter we’ve seen, period. I’ll settle for Noy Castillo. James Yap just hasn’t lived up to the hype... yet. Larry Fonacier, if he’s healthy enough, should be included in the pool. He’s got the height and the touch and give it four years, who knows.

"Imagine the opposition by that time: Yao Ming in 2008. That’s pretty scary."

Incidentally, at least three other people urged us to take Caidic out of retirement, expressing their apprehension that our team’s outside shooting will be weak.

Meanwhile, Ben Armonio, DDS ([email protected]) from California adds:

"As a big PBA fan and a long suffering basketball fanatic for Philippines basketball we welcome the great news with a big hope and the desire to see Philippines basketball regain some respectability in the international arena! With that in mind I have put together a team that I know will be very competitive in the years to come.

"Eric Menk, Tony Dela Cruz, Jayjay Helterbrand, Nic Belasco, Willie Miller, Joachim Thoss, Brandon Cablay, Renren Ritualo, Danny Seigle, Enrico Villanueva, Kerby Raymundo, Dondon Hontiveros, and a big guy in either an Andy Seigle if he is healthy, or a motivated Marlou Aquino.

"Everybody is excited and we are anxiously waiting for the build up and the formation of this team!"

Domminic Mendoza ([email protected]), representing "UK Filipino basketball fanatics" says:

"Greetings from UK. Happy and Blessed New Year. We are avid fans of San Miguel ever since the time of Coach Ning Ramos.

"As far as these players are concerned, I think they have all the potentials and capabilities to carry on for the National Team to once and for all bag the crown."

Mendoza names many of the players already mentioned, but adds Talk ’N Text’s Mark Telan and Montaña Pawnshop’s Alex Compton.

Ariel Lubaton ([email protected]) a production clerk at Weatherford Canada sent this correspondence:

"I’m an immigrant here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada with my loving wife Armie. We both came from Santiago City Isabela. I’ve been a fan of PBA since the glory days of Jawo at Gilbey’s Gin, Ginebra, Añejo Rum. Sad to say I’m not there when the Gin Kings captured their last crown.

"It’s nice to hear that a MOA has been signed for the benefit of Philippine Basketball, and i think it is long overdue. Best wishes to the RP Team that is to be formed. May you bring back the glory."

Head coach Chot Reyes was set to announce the initial 32-player pool yesterday, and originally said a final list would be revealed at the end of the month. Until then, keep your suggestions coming in.

Undertaker thanks for the news...

i also think like some of the guys that we need a lot of shooters, a few more Caidics in the line up, to be in contention, we could not beat the Big Guys of Asia in the paint but we can try to burn them from outside, similar formula of South Korea National Team good mix of tall & fast guys with a lot of shooters ...

No one is in the caliber of Allan Caidic as of now, that's the problem.
We got good medium range shooters like Tony Dela Cruz, but the best 3 point shooters in the PBA right now are Ren Ren Ritualo, James Yap, and Noy Castillo. I would say they are at best 80-85% of Allan Caidic's accuracy and consistency.....
