Have you guys ever tried customizing the Boxer AI? It has to be edited for each boxer on an individual basis but the results can be pretty good in terms of making the AI more competitive and fun to play against.

For example I always put the counter/aggressive slider down to 0% which makes the AI harder and also reduces their unrealistic punch rate. And they throw too many power punches because the later patches increased stamina loss, so I edit power punch % down to about 20%.

To take gameplay tweaking even further the whole "skills" section of boxer attributes can be appropriated purely to be used for game balancing and adjustments. Some individual boxer customization is lost as a result but you can have very powerful control over gameplay in return. Jabs and straights seem too powerful compared to hooks for instance so that can be changed. Or blocking can be made less powerful compared to sway/rolling. The possibilities are endless.

Great post, and I agree with you most things you just stated but when editing or changing the Boxer AI settings you dont not need to edit for each boxer on an individual basis. Once applied to settings, then those Boxer AI Settings are applied to all boxers in the game, Just like changing the difficulty to Hall of Fame, once you change difficulty in settings it is applied for all boxers.

The following is the gameplay settings I play on for the best simulation experience and for the most realist compubox numbers.

Difficulty- Greatest of All Time
Number of Rounds - 12
Round Length - 2min (Not 3min because EA did not do the best job with the Stamina and Conditioning feature. You have some fighter who throw over 1000 punches per fight, and if you individually change the boxer punch tendicies CPU to actually throw over 1000 punches their stamina will be completely drained by 5th round in this game, which is the reason for 2min rounds.
Saved by the Bell - Last round Only
Three knockdown Rule - NO
Referee Foul Awareness - 0-2
Referee Damage Awareness - 10
Boxer Power - 7
Boxer Speed - 5
Boxer Physical Damage - 10
Boxer Toughness - 8
Boxer Accuracy - 9-10
Boxer Stamina - 6
Counter Punch Window - 0
CPU Offensive awareness - 9
CPU Defense awareness = 10
CPU Punch Output - 0
