Lomachenko/Mayweather/Paquio weight Classes
Disclosure: Loma Fan
I always see arguments how Mayweather jumped 5 weight classes. How Paqauio jumped 8 weight classes. and how Lomachenko is struggling in his 3rd weight class.
People are comparing apples to oranges. Some of the weight jumping happened in the younger years. So i am going to put it into perspective.
Lomachenko turned Pro at 25 years of age - started 125, jumped to 130 at 28 years of age, jumped to 135 at 30 years of age
Mayweather Turned Pro at 19 years of age. At the age of 25 was fighting at 135, age 27 fight at 140, age 28 at 147. He also had 4 fights above 147 at random times (152 - Canelo, 154- Oscar, 154 -Cotto and 154 Mcgregor).
Pacquiao - turned Pro at 16. At the age of 25 was fighting at 125, at the age of 27 was fighting 130, at the age of 30 was fighting 135 and 140, at the age of 31 was fighting at 147. and one fight at 150 vs. Margarito
Just to compare apples to apples - After age 25
Lomachenko fought in 3 divisions (125,130,135)
Mayweather fought in 4 divisions (135,140,147,154)
Pacquiao fought in 5 divisions (125,130,135,140,147) (unless you consider Margarito catchweight then 6 divisions).
If we are going pre age 25 then
Lomachenko - No Pro Career but Won 2 Olympics gold medals, 2 world gold medals (1 silver gold world medal), 1 gold European,1 Gold Junior world at age of 18. In the AMs he fought in 3 weight classes, Flyweight, Featherweight, and Lightweight.
Mayweather - Won a title at 130
Paquio - fought in 107, won a title at 112 and won a title at 122
All of these guys are excellent fighters and are top echelon. There might be a handful of them in the entire history of the sport. We can sit here all day debating who beats who and who shouldn't be mentioned with who in the same sentence but if people are going to compare an aspect of their careers then at least try to use apples to apples comparison (wishful thinking).
I believe Lomachenko is fighting above his natural weight class. I believe that Mayweather was fighting above his natural weight class when he was fighting at 154. Paquio might have started fighting above his natural weight class at 147 but he grew into a full 147 in his early/mid 30s.
