What changed rap music was the copyright owner's recognition that black urban music was profitable as a "money for sampling" scheme.

Sounds like this could very well be true. Sucks for him leaving the damn meeting before it got juicy and he found out what the actual plan was.

There's no proof, but it's undeniable that A&R and companies like Def Jam and Interscope haven't been signing artists to give life to "conscious" hip hop.
Since the late 90s, especially with the death of many top Emcees you can take a look and notice almost all the big USA rap artists from early 2000 onwards from Lil Wayne to 2Chainz come from the south as the direction of hiphop shifted from California & NY to southern reigons and have no where near the lyrical prowess to spread education through their music unlike early hip hop artists.
Lil Wayne has had a record deal since he was 12-14 that dude ain't no gangsta.
I recommend you listen to this track you guys,
The song above touches on the subject of this exact letter along with other corruption.
And yall old heads if you were my age and lived around where I live you'd understand why it sucks that "conscious" hip hop is gone.

In before pseudo-intellectual frauds/idiots like Mos Def and Talib Kweli (among others) who spread disinformation in their lyrics and pander to audiences of either defeatists ("we ain't ever gonna get anywhere 'cause they won't let us, dawg!") or counter-culture hip-hop hipsters whose political opinions are stunningly similar to their own.
